Do I really have to make everything super thick to avoid light leaks?

Yeah that's typically how it has to work now. It may change sometime in the future, but not any time soon. It's a drawback to the system, but the benefits are a LOT of meshes, unified lighting, less memory usage, less artifacts/bleeds in general.

The benefits are worth it :)

just open up dp4 in editor and u will see what spessu mentioned. it was my work around as well, coz i couldnt get rid of light leaks, no matter how thick the walls have been
