  1. 1. good or bad?

i made some thoughts to what would make the game easier for new players and give a growing playerbase in general

please be nice while discussing and stay on topic.

Tutorial

- tutorial starting when you start the game for the first time (can be redone from home screen any time)

that would be scripted ingame "press forward button, press jump, crouch, do doublejump etc."

Matchmaking

- remove server browser, but add option for "private match"

- private matches would give an option for a grouped party (current count 4, need to be higher then) to create a full custom match, hosted in the turbo pixel server farm (like matchmaking). you could set everything on your own like timelimit, map, gamemmode, mutator, map editing, etc.

- non-steam server would still be possible with console "host/connect", which is needed for editor / LAN

- that means all actual gameservers would spawn off the turbo pixel server farm, like matchmaking

- every match would be done with quickplay and listed on homescreen and able to spectate, which results in less splitting the community (matchmaking + serverbrowser) and give easier access for everyone

- make all casual modes being filled with bots, which get replaced when a real player joins and get back when a player leaves (except race)

Replays

- disable saving replays on server, but give the option to download it from the server after match has ended (ingame, e.g. ending screen)

- add a replay browser from the menu (make them finally accessible)

Nice to have

- add leaderboard accessible from the menu

- add inventory to menu where you can see all items listed (like in your steam inventory)

- add option to trade ingame with players in your party

Add Competitive Race and I'm sold.

Some additional thoughts:

  1. Have a "PLAY NOW" option where it puts you into any casual game w/ players regardless of mode. Always keep 1 server active in various regions with active bots so newbs can always find a game instantly.
  2. An option at the top for "MAP EDITOR" or something like that which will jump you straight into an map in editor mode.
  3. "Change Map" window includes a drop down option for "My Workshop" (queries only items in your workshop

We don't need that many competitive modes. Only those modes that playerbase could keep active should be kept.

There is absolutely no point to delude new players that they can find 4v4 competitive games at any time. Further more, those options existence hurt playerbase suitable gamemodes.

Code base is already there for those modes, if Reflex will keep growing, there shouldn't be too much work to bring them back when playerbase is big enough to support them.

Removing public custom games is bad idea and at least should be followed with more detailed solution. Match making neglects mutators - casual players most loved thing. It also remove sense of in-game community, Article that hits soft spot for me. Further more, CA players most liked maps are not in map pool. I also wonder how race without public servers would work, since map changes are more like when people feel done, not when timer runs out.

Other than that look good :)

its pretty much a draft what i did there. so nothing set in stone anyways, since im not a dev.

i just want to see what people think about it in general and maybe get some more input for this direction or not

Probably an unpopular opinion, but I think the game should prioritize on player experience over viewer experience. It's obvious at this point that Reflex won't be the next big thing in eSports, so maybe stop treating it as one. Loosen it up from areas where the strictness of competitive ideals takes precedence over fun, properly finalizing stake launcher as a core weapon would be a good way to start in my opinion. Perhaps add some variety to map scale and the way items are distributed, two megas, two reds, only two yellows, one mega-one green.. one rocket?.. have some experimentation with taboos like these.

I always thought that "remove server browser" was a meme. I really value the freedom reflex gives players in setting up their client and matches, it's a rare thing in gaming these days. I feel like removing the server browser and effectively the ability to host your own servers would take away a large portion of that freedom.

Strongly object to removing server browser, especially as a race player. Dank disciples of defrag has a pretty big collection of maps that never made it to steam workshop for one reason or another. And matchmaking only is a pretty dangerous proposition for a game with such a small community, especially for non-EU regions. Thanks to the server browser, NA at least manages to get some FFA/ATDM activity now and then. The restrictions of matchmaking in terms of map selection, team balance and such for these modes would definitely be an obstacle for those.

Good in general, but I am also a bit dubious for the server browser removal.

I would rather see the removal of casual MM coupled with an improvement of matchmaking for multi : lobby/chat room where you can see all queued players and their rank; and discuss, and create a party, etc.

i get your point with server browser. what about the "private match" button just leads you to the server browser then?

my thoughts is that its obvious to go for any kind of matchmaking match and not the server browser for new people or in general, becoz this seperates the community (which is still too small)

right now its pretty much server browser only and no matchmaking

also about quantity of what modes you can select. can you give some examples like what should be in casual and what in comp?

I really like the idea to create a custom game on official servers. Because for now the only server where I can play with EU guys is Novosibirsk and to do it, we have to comm in Discord then queue together, wait some time to pair and then play the same maps over and over again.

Sure it should not be ranked matches, but the ability to start our own server with any maps and mods in one click would be nice.

Also, I don't mind about the removal of server browser because I never use it anyway (except checking Reflex population), when we play on private server we just connect via steam.

And about comp game modes, it would be nice to have just 2 modes, duel and maybe some 2v2 action. But reduce timelimit up to 10 minutes in doubles for comp ruleset and add fraglimit to prevent one-sided games.

PS Rama's ruleset is good but I would like to see more dmg buff for all weapons, especially shotgun because lower time to kill = more fun for newcomers.

If only someone would take the initiative and get those maps uploaded to the workshop... :D

Quickplay: Redirect players to random populated server from serverbrowser (remove casual MM entirely, remove carnage from casual gamemodes to make them more beginner friendly, especially teammodes become unbalanced very quickly with a single person timing carnage.. so why not remove it for casual modes?)

In my opinion race is not a real gamemode so I would make a separate quickplay button for that.

Competetive Duel should have a small mappool (4 maps: 1 classic evergreen from Quake, 2 Reflex maps, 1experimental map for testing and finalising new community maps because proving grounds doesn't work. I always end up playing catalyst when queueing in both playlists. Nobody plays proving grounds.) I prefer small mappools, because it keeps the game more simple and gives me less headache. I can focus on few maps that matter and learn them better. I don't have to worry about learning/practising too many maps at once, which motivates me to play more and feel progression. So.. better have a small mappool in comp, but make it rotate all 4 - 6 weeks. Maybe do not change the whole mappool for a new pool, but exchange the two most played and the least played maps. Or... if the least played map is a new community map, it should get removed from comp for a while. With some rework done the updated map could make a return in a future comp mappool.

Competetive should also have 3v3 TDM (maybe rename this gamemode to 'carnage control' since this is what the gamemode is about really..) and some form of CTF (I currently don't mind CTF, because it's the least fun/balanced gamemode. In my opionion there should not be carnage in any CTF map and the game should be played roundwise (1 capture per round to prevent serious snowballing and maybe make items respawn only one time oer round). Maybe remove carnage from CTF entirely, replace it with an instagib-rifle (since it's a lot more balanced and more fun to use im CTF) and add a Hook pickup to each base.

Add Stakegun. Add more knockback and linear splashdamage to rockets and grenades, but lower rocket and GL ammo (because Quakeworld is the best and Reflex should move more towards QW direction instead of some wiered boring QL/PQL mix, we already have Quake Champions to play slower paced, super strategic gimmic AFPS)... atm Reflex is a pure armor and hitscan fest. It's not as much fun as in the early reflex days (I hope it will be better in Rama-ruleset). And please bring back red blood, stronger gravity and add more weapon models. I prefered the old weapon models by a lot (first pass GL, Shotgun, RL and Boltrifle.. For tje most part they looked more simple, but they were smaller, longer and had better proportions.. and not too much unnecessary geometry).

yes, but carnage is fun. So it should remain accessible for beginners. A better idea might be to make it spawn at random times in casual games (ex.between 30s and 90s), and why not in random locations also.

It would be a tragedy if the server browser were removed imo. A better idea would be to put the top-5 (by player count) servers on the main menu, alongside the matchmaking games.
